You may be familiar with fisheye digital effects that contort your pictures into a round bubble shape. However, did you know that these filters are mimicking the effect of fisheye lenses? These types of lenses have been around since the early part of the twentieth century. They allow the camera to take extremely wide angle photos, creating a hemi-spherical distortion effect.
This distortion can create new fascinating focal points. They make the viewer feel like they’re inside of a soap bubble, looking out at the photo’s subject. This immersive visual effect can powerfully enhance the viewers’ appreciation of the artwork.
Greg gets out his fisheye lens when he’s in a particularly whimsical mood. Rather than finding a particular subject that calls for the fisheye, more often he will wander around for a while with the lens on his camera frame, snapping things as they catch his fancy. If he finds something particularly compelling when distorted into a hemisphere, he’ll spend quite some time taking shot after shot to get the angle just right.
